pinacoteca di Brera

The Pinacoteca di Brera is located in the beautiful Brera district within the walls of an ancient fourteenth-century convent and today houses the Braidense National Library, the Astronomical Observatory, the Botanical Garden, the Lombard Institute of Sciences and Letters and the Fine Arts Academy.

Inside there are over 400 paintings from the fourteenth to the twentieth century by famous artists such as Caravaggio, Leonardo, Tintoretto, Raffaello, Rembrandt, Mantegna, Tiziano, Piero della Francesca and many others.

The Ambrosian Pinacoteca was founded in 1603 by Cardinal Federico Borromeo, for this reason each painting recalls his encounters with the artists of history, his correspondences with other cardinals, his experiences with art collectors such as Zuccari and Francesco Maria del Monte.

The precious collection of paintings represents one of the most original artistic collections in Milan on the theme of sacred art, flanked by the numerous writings preserved in the Library.

The visit itinerary winds through the various rooms of the Pinacoteca where the most famous paintings in the world are posted such as Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit and Tiziano's Adoration of the Three Kings, as well as drawings by Raffaello and Michelangelo, Leonardo's masterpieces such as the portrait of Leonardo drawn by one of his disciples, the copy of the Last Supper by Vespino.

The Pinacoteca of Sforzesco Castle is located inside the castle and contains over 230 masterpieces dating back to the period from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century.

Many paintings are dedicated to Our Lady, then to "female" sacred art by the artists Andrea Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini and Filippo Lippi.

One of the rooms of the gallery is the Griselda Room, decorated with fifteenth-century frescoes with a zodiacal theme.
